How Do You Integrate Off-page Signals into Your AI Visibility Strategy?

Key Takeaways

  • Off-page signals are often the primary source for AI answer engines, with Reddit alone accounting for 21.9% of all off-page citations across every AI model tracked, more than double the next closest source, YouTube, at 10.3%.
  • Wikipedia (7.3%), LinkedIn (6.5%), and Forbes (5.3%) round out the top five off-page sources overall, but individual AI models show distinct preferences beyond this average.
  • Model-specific preferences vary significantly: Reddit represents 51.8% of Grok's off-page citations and 30.4% of Perplexity's, while Copilot leans more heavily on Bing-indexed and retail sources like Amazon (6%) and Walmart (3.2%).
  • Vertical-specific authority sources often outrank the all-segment leaders: in Financial Services, Bankrate (27.9%) and NerdWallet (24.4%) outrank Reddit as top-cited sources, while in Healthcare, PMC/NCBI (10.2%) and Healthline (9%) lead.
  • An effective GEO strategy must expand beyond owned content (blog, homepage, product pages) to include a presence plan for vertical-specific authority sites, since these sources feed directly into how AI models describe a brand.

Building an AI visibility strategy requires a clear understanding of how answer engines actually operate, which is why we created the State of AI Search 2026 Report: to share trends we’ve observed from millions of data points spanning 8+ LLMs, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, we also wanted to go deeper and contextualize our findings, turning to extensive conversations with marketers grappling with a whole new acquisition channel that forms its own opinions on which brands or products to recommend.

Today, we’re answering one of the biggest questions about off-page signals.

Methodology

Between December 2025 and March 2026, we collected and analyzed millions of AI-generated responses across B2B and B2C. We also layered the product data with a supplementary analysis of over 500 conversations in Q2 (April-June 2026), including enterprise demos, strategy sessions, and onboarding calls. We identified the most common questions and unresolved priorities for marketing teams building out GEO programs. These companies include both enterprise and mid-market teams, with a median average revenue of $933 million and median average size of 755 employees.

Each question in this blog series is answered with benchmark metrics compiled from our product data, along with a series of recommended action items to improve your GEO efforts. You can view the full reporthere.

How Do You Integrate Off-page Signals into Your AI Visibility Strategy?

Off-page signals are often the primary source for AI answer engines. Reddit alone accounts for 21.9% of all off-page citations across every AI model we track, more than double the next closest source, YouTube, at 10.3%. Wikipedia (7.3%), LinkedIn (6.5%), and Forbes (5.3%) round out the top five.

However, individual models also have particular preferences. For example, Reddit represents 51.8% of Grok's off-page citations and 30.4% of Perplexity's, while Copilot leans more heavily on Bing-indexed and retail sources like Amazon (6%) and Walmart (3.2%).

Vertical-specific sources also factor into the equation. In Financial Services, Bankrate (27.9%) and NerdWallet (24.4%) outrank Reddit as the top-cited sources, while in Healthcare, PMC/NCBI (10.2%) and Healthline (9%) lead.

What does this mean for marketers? An effective GEO strategy needs to expand its focus  beyond owned content like the blog, homepage, and product pages, and factor in vertical-specific authority sites.

Action Items

  1. Identify the top five off-page sources specific to your vertical (not just the all-segment average) and build a presence plan for each, whether genuine community engagement, contributed expert content, or structured data partnerships.
  2. Monitor brand mentions and sentiment on Reddit and the other top platforms in your category as a standing part, since these sources feed directly into how models describe you (even when you have no control over the content itself).
  3. If your category has a dominant niche authority site (Bankrate and NerdWallet in finance, Healthline and Mayo Clinic in healthcare, Zillow and Angi in real estate), prioritize earning legitimate placement, citations, or data partnerships over generic PR outreach.

FAQs

How do you integrate off-page signals into your AI visibility strategy?
Off-page signals should be treated as a primary input for AI answer engines, not a secondary channel. This means identifying the top off-page sources specific to your vertical, building a presence plan for each (through community engagement, contributed expert content, or structured data partnerships), and monitoring brand mentions and sentiment on those platforms as a standing practice, since AI models draw directly on them when describing your brand.

Which off-page source has the biggest impact on AI citations?
Reddit is the single largest off-page source across all AI models tracked, accounting for 21.9% of all off-page citations. That's more than double the next closest source, YouTube, at 10.3%. Wikipedia (7.3%), LinkedIn (6.5%), and Forbes (5.3%) round out the overall top five.

Do different AI models rely on different off-page sources?
Yes, model-specific preferences diverge significantly from the overall average. Reddit represents 51.8% of Grok's off-page citations and 30.4% of Perplexity's, well above the 21.9% cross-model average. Copilot, by contrast, leans more heavily on Bing-indexed and retail sources, citing Amazon in 6% of cases and Walmart in 3.2%.

Does the top off-page source change by industry vertical?
Yes. While Reddit leads across the all-segment average, vertical-specific authority sites often outrank it within a given category. In Financial Services, Bankrate (27.9%) and NerdWallet (24.4%) are cited more than Reddit. In Healthcare, PMC/NCBI (10.2%) and Healthline (9%) lead as the top-cited sources.

Why can't marketers rely solely on owned content for AI visibility?
Because AI answer engines draw heavily on off-page, third-party sources when forming responses, a strategy focused only on owned content like the blog, homepage, and product pages misses the sources that most directly shape how models describe a brand. Off-page signals, particularly community platforms and vertical-specific authority sites, need to be an explicit part of the GEO strategy.

How should marketers prioritize which off-page sources to focus on?
Marketers should identify the top five off-page sources specific to their own vertical, rather than relying on the all-segment average, and build a presence plan for each. If a category has a dominant niche authority site, such as Bankrate and NerdWallet in finance or Healthline and Mayo Clinic in healthcare, earning legitimate placement or data partnerships with that site should take priority over generic PR outreach.

What data supports these off-page citation findings?
The findings are based on millions of AI-generated responses collected between December 2025 and March 2026 across B2B and B2C, supplemented by an analysis of over 500 conversations in Q2 2026 (April–June), including enterprise demos, strategy sessions, and onboarding calls with enterprise and mid-market teams averaging $933 million in revenue and 755 employees.
